The NHL Daily Fix is your morning wakeup call, with news and notes for the day's hockey action.

Morning buzz

Marian Gaborik made his debut with the Columbus Blue Jackets and he was outstanding, finishing the game with a team best plus-14 Corsi (meaning Columbus attempted 14 more shots than Nashville with Gaborik on the ice), recorded an assist, and scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in a 3-1 Columbus victory.

That's what you call being a difference-maker.

Speaking of making a difference, it was a big night for debuts across the National Hockey League. While Gaborik and Jaromir Jagr were scoring game-winning goals for their new teams, Ben Bishop made his first start in Tampa Bay and turned aside all 45 shots he faced in a 5-0 win over the Hurricanes. The Flyers beat Toronto, 4-3, on Thursday night but lost defenseman Kimmo Timonen late in the game. That's not what an already shorthanded Flyers defense needed. [Sam Carchidi on Twitter]

Islanders defenseman Mark Streit admitted he was worried about being traded before the deadline. The Islanders, still very much in the playoff race, decided to keep him even though he's scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent after the season. [Newsday]

The Washington Capitals are, as of Friday morning, in first place in the Southeast Division. One person who is excited about that: Forward Mathieu Perreault. Watch in the middle here as he completely loses his mind in celebration at the conclusion of their shootout win over the Islanders on Friday. It's the second time this week he's been more than a little excited on the bench:
