Martin Erat leaves Capitals game after hit from Erik Gudbranson

Just before the NHL trade deadline on Wednesday, the Washington Capitals sent one of their top prospects, Filip Forsberg, to the Nashville Predators in exchange for forward Martin Erat. It might be a risky move in the long term, but Erat is a top-six winger and should help the Capitals in their push for the Southeast Division title.

Unfortunately for the Capitals, Erat was injured late in the first period of Saturday night's game -- his second with the Capitals -- in Florida when he was hit from behind into the boards by Panthers defenseman Erik Gudbranson (shown above).

Gudbranson received a five-minute major for boarding and a game misconduct. The NHL's department of player safety is sure to review it for possible supplemental discipline.

Erat did not return to the game.

In 37 games this season, Erat has four goals to go with 17 assists.
