The Buffalo Sabres entered Friday night's game against the New York Rangers in a truly must-win situation. Lose and their faint hope at the playoffs is done.

For the first 18 1/2 minutes of the first period things didn't look too bad. Then the final minute-plus of the period came and it looked really bad.

First bad luck struck when the Rangers got a goal from Carl Hagelin on a wraparound attempt. He threw the puck into the crease and it ricocheted in off Sabres defenseman Adam Pardy. Just 57 seconds later, Brad Richards threw the puck toward the crease and it bounced off the skate of Sabres defenseman Christian Ehrhoff and in.

Tough goals to swallow because it was just bad luck. Then, with only a few seconds left in the period, they were hit once more. This time Ryan Miller could only blame himself. Ryane Clowe pounced on his mistake and made it 3-0 just like that.

"It's one of the worst mistakes I've made in my whole time here, worst timing," Miller said after the game. Not hard to believe.

This is how a season goes down the drain in a minute (ignoring the first 40 games of the season, that is).

UPDATE: It continued in the second period. The Rangers scored a fourth goal to knock Miller out of the game and then immediately scored on Jhonas Enroth -- all within the first 1:40 of the period. In total it was five goals in three minutes.

You know it's bad when the Sabres had to tweet this:
