Entering Tuesday's big game against the Winnipeg Jets, the Washington Capitals had allowed just 22 goals over their previous 10 games. A lot of that is due to goaltender Braden Holtby, who has been playing his best hockey of the season.
But he received a little bit of help in the first period against the Jets from defenseman John Erskine.
After Erskine made a sprawling save to prevent an easy goal into an open net for the Jets earlier in the period, he made another outstanding defensive play with less than seven minutes to play in the period when he made this save along the goal line, swiping away a bouncing puck just before it crossed the line.
Great play by Erskine, but, hey, Blake Wheeler (No. 26 in white), what are you doing raising your hands in celebration when the puck is right at your feet and not yet across the line?
The play had to be reviewed but the on-ice call of no goal was upheld.
