It didn't take long for the Dallas Stars to find a new general manager.

Just a couple of days after the team parted ways with Joe Nieuwendyk following a fifth-straight non-playoff season, the team announced Monday morning that it has hired Jim Nill to take over the team.

Nill was the assistant general manager to Ken Holland in Detroit for the past 15 years.

"Jim Nill, along with Ken Holland, has been at the core of the Detroit Red Wings' front office for nearly two decades, and we are extremely excited to secure him as our new general manager," said Stars owner Tom Gaglardi in a team statement.

"Jim's record in Detroit speaks for itself, contributing to four Stanley Cup championships as well as drafting and developing some of the league's best players. Jim is universally respected throughout the hockey world, and we are very fortunate to have him as our general manager. We are confident that his leadership, expertise, work ethic and direction will position the club for consistent success once again."

Nill was mentioned as a front-runner for the job as soon as word surfaced that Nieuwendyk was on his way out. In a statement released by the Stars he said there have been other jobs presented to him in the past but that he was waiting for the right opportunity to present itself, and Dallas was that opportunity.

He certainly has some pieces to work with. He takes over a team that already has established NHLers like Loui Eriksson, Jamie Benn and Kari Lehtonen signed long term to go with young up-and-coming players like Brenden Dillon , Cody Eakin, and Alex Chiasson, and a farm system that includes Jack Campbell, Joe Morrow and Jamie Oleksiak.
