In the second period of a scoreless game on Saturday night between the Red Wings and Ducks, Detroit forward Justin Abdelkader delivered a punishing hit on Ducks defenseman Toni Lydman. The Ducks defenseman was knocked down and stayed there for a few minutes before being helped off the ice.
The hit resulted in a five-minute major for Abdelkader -- the call being for charging -- and a game misconduct. On the ensuing power play, the Ducks scored just 18 seconds in to take a 1-0 lead.
Now the question will become whether or not Abdelkader will hear from Brendan Shanahan. It is pretty close to tell if he jumped off the ice before contact or not but it certainly looked bad as Abdelkader soared through the air. Shanahan might not care either way if the principle point of contact was Lydman's head.
The Ducks announced that Lydman would not return in the game.
