The NHL announced Sunday evening that Detroit Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader has been suspended two games for charging Anaheim's Toni Lydman during the Ducks' 4-0 win on Saturday night.

Abdelkader was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for the hit, while Lydman was injured and is reportedly suffering from a sore neck and migraines on Sunday. His status for Game 4 on Monday is not yet known.

"Abdlekader skates a considerable distance and elevates to violently check Lydman, making significant head contact," said Brendan Shanahan in the NHL's video explanation.

"Abdlekader elevates at contact, turning what could have been a hard, full body check into a high, violent check with significant contact to the head that caused an injury."

This is the first time Abdlekader has been suspended in his NHL career.

Abdlekader scored 10 goals in 48 games for the Red Wings this season and has one goal in the first three playoff games.
