Shortly after the season the Colorado Avalanche cleared house, dismissing coach Joe Sacco and seeing vice president of hockey operations Eric Lacroix resign. The shakeups led to speculation that perhaps Joe Sakic could take a much bigger role in the franchise.

That speculation stepped into the realm of likely on Wednesday with this from Daren Millard of Sportsnet.

Sakic has been in the role of executive advisor and alternate governor for the Avs since 2011 when he decided to get a little more involved with the franchise while still being able to be with this family. With this he would get a lot more hands on.

Now a couple of years have passed and the Avs are struggling so the time could be ripe to bring Sakic into a bigger role, as Millard points out similar to Elway with the Broncos. It's worked well for them across the parking lot so might as well try it with the Avs, too.

If Sakic does indeed take a bigger role, one of the first tasks will be hiring a coach to replace Sacco. It's been suggested they could try to lure Dave Tippett from Phoenix or they might try and target another former Avs star in Patrick Roy. Or go somewhere else completely.

Whichever way they go, it looks like Sakic will have a big say.

It would also make for a really great story come draft time when the Avs select Seth Jones No. 1 overall. It was Sakic who Seth's dad, NBA player Popeye Jones, spoke to about his son's interest in hockey.
