The injury is expected to have a three-month recovery period and he should be ready for the start of the 2013-14 season.
All things considered, that's actually some good news for the Hurricanes as the injury looked to be much worse when it happened. Staal was injured Thursday while playing for team Canada when he was hit by Sweden's Alex Edler. Edler was ejected from the game and suspended for the remainder of the tournament for the knee-on-knee hit.
Staal is coming off a huge season for the Hurricanes and was one of the few bright spots on a team that finished near the bottom of the Eastern Conference. He scored 18 goals to go with 35 assists in 48 games. His 53 points were good enough for sixth in the NHL scoring race.
