If former Red Sox catcher Doug Mirabelli was watching Game 6 between the Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings, he might have had panic-inducing flashbacks to trying to catch Tim Wakefield. Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford now knows his pain.
With the game tied midway through the second period, Joakim Andersson sent a seemingly gentle shot toward the net. It wobbled through the air, not unlike a Wakefield knuckleball, and right over the waving glove of Crawford. It gave Detroit the 2-1 lead and a big goal in a game where goals had been awfully hard to come by.
The puck was certainly knuckling, which makes it tougher, but this is one Crawford has to find a way to get in front of. It dipped a little bit, as the replay showed, but not to the degree you'd expect to fool an NHL goaltender.
While Mirabelli might be crying into his catcher's mitt, the fictional Russ Tyler of D2: The Mighty Ducks fame is beaming with pride.
