The Los Angeles Kings are using their time off before the Western Conference finals to lock up one of their upcoming free agents.

The team announced Thursday it signed defenseman Robyn Regehr to a two-year contract extension. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but TSN's Darren Dreger reports it's worth a total of $6 million, which comes out to a salary-cap hit of $3 millinon per year.

Had the sides not agreed to a new contract extension, he would have been an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Regehr was acquired just before the trade deadline from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for two second-round draft picks. The Kings had a need for a defenseman like Regehr due to the injuries to Willie Mitchell and Matt Greene. Greene has since returned to the lineup, but Mitchell's future is very much in doubt.

In 12 regular-season games with the Kings, Regehr recorded two assists. He has one assist in 13 playoff games and has been one of their top options on the penalty kill.
