The New York Rangers made it official on Friday and introduced Alain Vigneault as their newest coach at Radio City Music Hall.

Vigneault comes to New York after spending the past seven years in Vancouver, winning six Northwest Division titles and making one trip to the Stanley Cup Final.

"AV is one of the top coaches in the NHL, and we are fortunate to have him in New York," Rangers general manager Glen Sather said.

When discussing the hire, Sather talked about how much the NHL has changed over the past three or four years and that it's becoming a more offensive game and even referenced Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final when the Blackhawks beat the Bruins in a wild 6-5 shootout of a game. The Rangers, under Tortorella in 2012-13, were one of the lowest-scoring teams in the league despite a roster that included players like Rick Nash, Marian Gaborik (before he was traded) and Brad Richards.

Sather said he didn't want to criticize anybody who enjoyed the defensive aspect of the game, but that he liked the style of play that Vigneault's teams had. His Canucks teams finished in the top five in goal scoring in three of the past four years.

Rangers owner James Dolan started off the press conference by thanking the recently fired Tortorella and added that he has no doubt that Tortorella will be coaching in the NHL again very soon.
