John Tortorella will be named head coach of the Vancouver Canucks, reports Louis Jean of TVA Sports and ESPN's Pierre LeBrun.

Tortorella, who was fired by the New York Rangers after the team's second-round ouster at the hands of the Boston Bruins, reportedly was offered the Canucks job on Friday and both sides were nearing an agreement.

This report also comes on the heels of Tortorella's former team introducing former Canucks coach Alain Vigneault as its new bench boss on Friday.

Vancouver was the last open coaching job remaining in the NHL after the Dallas Stars named Lindy Ruff head coach and the Phoenix Coyotes signed Dave Tippett to an extension on Friday.

In four-plus seasons with the Rangers, Tortorella led New York to the playoffs four times, including an Eastern Conference finals berth in 2012. He also spent six years with the Tampa Bay Lightning, guiding the franchise to its 2004 Stanley Cup. Tortorella received the Jack Adams Award as the NHL's top coach that same season.

He might be best known for his run-ins with the press over the years, but Tortorella's teams have missed the playoffs just three times in his 10-plus seasons as a head coach in the NHL. He's had success and while he left New York on a sour note, he'll have a fresh start and a veteran-laden team in Vancouver.
