The Ottawa Senators lost their all-time leading scorer, Daniel Alfredsson, on Friday and replaced him on the roster with free agent Clarke MacArthur.

And it might actually make them a better team in 2013.

The Senators agreed to terms on a two-year contract with MacArthur, signing him after the Toronto Maple Leafs allowed him to hit the open market after misusing him for most of last season.

MacArthur isn't the biggest name to find a new home on Friday but he was one player that seemed to be sneaking under the radar that could provide a team with a very productive player at an affordable price. And that's just what he's going to do for the Senators.

He's scored at least 20 goals in two of the past three seasons and is coming off a 2012-13 campaign that saw him score eight goals in 40 games with the Leafs. Even more than the goal-production is the fact that MacArthur has proven to be a fantastic possession player that always seems to be helping to move play in the right direction. When he's on the ice his team always outshoots its opponents, which is a pretty valuable skill to have.

When looking at the trade-off of going from Aldredsson to MacArthur in 2013 I don't think it's a stretch to say that the Senators are coming out ahead on Friday. Alfredsson's had a Hall of Fame career, but he's not the player anymore. You're not building a team and paying players for what they've done for you in the past, you're building a team for what they're going to do right now and in the future.

And right now the Senators might have the better player.
