When the season begins in October, the New York Rangers could possibly be without their captain Ryan Callahan.

Callahan, the fearless shot-blocker who has donned the C in New York for a few years now, underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum this summer. He was on hand on Thursday at Yankee Stadium as the league had its ceremonial photo op for the outdoor games coming the Bronx's way next season features the three Metro-area teams and spoke with Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News about his recovery.

That would be less than ideal. Yes, missing a month's worth of games this season isn't as big of a deal as last season with the truncated schedule, however remember where the Rangers are right now. They are going to debut with a new coach in Alain Vigneault, so getting that preseason time and the first month of the season would be quite a benefit for down the line, you'd figure. Missing a player as key to the Rangers as Callahan would be disappointing.

But it's something that had to get done and of course it's more important that Callahan is important for the final few months and (the Rangers hope) the playoffs rather than the first month of the season.
