It took longer than most expected, but the Vancouver Canucks and restricted free agent Chris Tanev finally reached a deal on Thursday.

The Canucks announced the contract is for one year and numerous reports, including Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet, put the pact at $1.5 million.

Tanev, an undrafted free agent who signed with the Canucks in 2010, got his first big taste of the NHL last season, playing in 38 of the 48 games. He tallied two goals and five assists while averaging 17:17 of game action, the most in a season thus far in his career.

This would qualify as a prove-it deal for Tanev. The price is certainly a little high for what he's done up until now but not much. His hope is that he will take another step forward this season and earn much more next summer when he again hits free agency.

With Frank Corrado signed to a two-way deal, Tanev marks the sixth one-way deal the Canucks have with defensemen at this point. He will get his shot to continue to play on the Canucks blue line.
