St. Louis Blues GM Doug Armstrong was hopeful that a deal could be reached with restricted free-agent defenseman Alex Pietrangelo in time for him to show up for training camp. That's not going to happen.

With camp opening up on Wednesday all across the league, the Blues and Pietrangelo haven't met that deadline. Armstrong confirmed that Pietrangelo won't be around when camp opens and it might be a little while yet before he is.

"Talks between the Blues and Alex's camp have broken off for now and Alex will not be reporting for our camp today," Armstrong said.

That doesn't sound very good, you never want to hear about talks breaking off. When Armstrong updated the contract talks last week it didn't sound as though they were incredibly far apart on a deal but it's obviously still enough that the training camp deadline wasn't enough to spur a compromise.

Without a doubt Pietrangelo is one of the Blues' best players so getting him locked up on the right deal is important for all involved and is worth a little patience now. Depending how much time he misses here at the start it might have an impact on when he comes back or it could be like P.K. Subban who had a delayed start last season because of contract talks before winning the Norris Trophy. Especially with an 82-game season, the Blues can make sure they get a deal they can live with and the same goes for Pietrangelo. Still, I'm sure all parties would like to have it wrapped up to begin the campaign.

Pietrangelo, the fourth overall pick by the Blues in 2008, had five goals and 19 assists last season in 47 games, continuing his rise toward being one of the top two-way defensemen in the league.

To help fill the void with Pietrangelo sitting out, the Blues brought in veteran defenseman Ryan Whitney for training camp and perhaps beyond.
