On Wednesday night the Phoenix Coyotes played an intra-squad scrimmage but it wasn't your ordinary scrimmage. It was attended by more than 6,300 fans at Jobing.com Arena and it was played to benefit the families of the 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots firefighters who lost their lives battling a wild fire in late June.

In total the Coyotes raised $165,198 for the families and took the entire evening to honor the fallen firefighters and other firefighters who serve our communities every day. The night included a touching pregame video honoring the 19 fallen men.

Here is where that total came from.

Ticket sales from the game combined with the 50/50 raffle and player signed jerseys auction generated over $67,599. The Coyotes ownership group IceArizona, LLC matched these efforts by donating an additional $67,599, while the Coyotes players donated $25,000. The Coyotes Alumni Association also contributed $5,000.

"It was an unbelievable, successful night," Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said. "Tonight was about giving back to the community and helping those families, and it was an excellent night.

"It puts everything in perspective. The video and seeing the people obviously it was nice to be able to contribute and help out some way. Our players and fans and our organization should have a good feeling about helping somebody that goes out of their way to help us in the community."

Great gesture from the Coyotes and their new ownership to put this event together. It's great to see that even though the tragedy happened a couple months ago, they haven't forgotten.
