In an 82-game season, players are required to play 41 games (half) in the regular season or to play at least one playoff game. Mayers did neither of those as he suited up in just 19 games last season for Chicago with zero postseason games. Still, the league made an exception and Mayers joins the team in history, pretty great to see after his long career.
Joining Mayers are guys like Dan Carcillo (he played in 26 games and one postseason game) and Ben Smith. Smith barely snuck in when he played a single game in the postseason to match his total from the regular season. In total Smith played 28:44 all season long in a Blackhawks sweater but that one postseason game earned him the automatic spot.
Oh, and the rest of the crew is there, too. Captain Jonathan Toews, Conn Smythe winner Patrick Kane, coach Joel Quenneville and even Pierre Gauthier, the former GM in Montreal, Anaheim and Ottawa who is now in the Blackhawks front office.
The Blackhawks will honor their championship season on Tuesday night at home against the Caps as the season gets underway and the Blackhawks begin their defense of the trophy.
For those interested, here's a look at how they go about engraving the Cup. This is undoubtedly one of hockey's, nay, sports' greatest traditions.
