NHL rumors: Penguins 'not currently interested' in Ilya Bryzgalov

With the status of Tomas Vokoun being uncertain but not looking promising, the Pittsburgh Penguins have a humoungous big question to answer right now with their backup goaltender. They have an in-house option in Jeff Zatkoff to serve as Marc-Andre Fleury's backup but another name popped up on Sunday night: Ilya Bryzgalov.

The report from former CSN Philly reporter (now covering the Ducks) Lisa Hillary, suggested the Penguins were showing interest in the former Flyers' goaltender. As terrific as it would be from a pure entertainment standpoint to see Bryz go across the state and be on the other side of the rivalry, it's not likely to happen.

Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that's the clear message right now; there's no interest from the Penguins.

We could parse Yohe's words here and not the significance of the word "currently" thrown in there, but it's probably not necessary because really, it just doesn't make much sense, a Penguins/Bryzgalov partnership.

Aside from the fact that Bryzgalov really strugged in Philadelphia behind a subpar defense, there are the other angles to consider like his locker room demeanor -- there were suggestions it was somewhat of a distraction -- to how much money he might cost. It wouldn't be much mind you, but the Penguins are already dealing with a cap squeeze. Though if Vokoun goes on LTIR, as is likely, that would free up $2 million. Again though, it's very unlikely to happen.

But could you imagine a Fleury/Bryzgalov tandem? I'm sure Penguins fans don't want to but that would be highly entertaining.
