VIDEO: Ilya Kovalchuk injured on hit from teammate Alexei Ponikarovsky

NHL previews: Atlantic Division | Metropolitan Division | Central Division | Pacific Division

While the New Jersey Devils are getting ready to begin their season in the NHL, former Devil Ilya Kovalchuk is having his stop in the KHL. He was injured by another former Devil Alexei Ponikarovsky and will miss four weeks of action with a shoulder injury.

The kicker? The former Devils teammates are still teammates with SKA St. Petersburg. It was friendly fire that will sideline Kovalchuk for a month. Ouch.

Sure they're broken up about this development in New Jersey.

Up until his bad-chance meeting with Ponikarovsky at the blue line, Kovalchuk was doing alright or SKA. He has seven goals and three assists in nine games. And one tough and embarrassing injury.
