The Minnesota Wild have signed forward Jason Pominville to a five-year extension. The team announced the deal on Thursday morning.

With the Wild getting ready to open their season Thursday night at home against the Kings, Pominville was busy negotiating a new contract. He was traded to Minnesota last season near the deadline as the Sabres were getting ready to undergo a rebuild. It didn't hurt that he only had one season left on his contract, thus preciptating the need for a new deal and making him a little more attractive to other teams without a big commitment.

Now the Wild get him on their terms going forward.

The new contract won't take affect until next season so it's going to take Pominville to the age of 36, perhaps the last "prime" contract of his career. The price is expensive but not absurdly so given what Pominville has shown he's capable of and considering his current contract carries an average salary of $5.3 million.

Pominville played 10 regular-season games with the Wild last season, scoring four goals and five assists. He's going to be in a big spot again this season with the Wild as he's expected to open on a line with Mikko Koivu and Zach Parise.

In his last full season in 2011-12, Pominville had 30 goals to go with 43 assists for the Sabres. In addition to being one of their top players, he was also the captain in Buffalo before being traded, a well-respected player across the league. Pominville, who has dual-citizenship between the USA and Canada, could have extra motivation to perform well this season as he was left off the American Olympic Orientation Camp roster. With a big performance perhaps he could play himself into consideration for Sochi.
