Patrick Roy fined $10,000 for actions in first game as coach

After his NHL coaching debut ended with a bang (on the bench partition), Avalanche head coach Patrick Roy has reportedly been fined $10,000 by the NHL.

In announcing the fine, Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operation (what a title) Colin Campbell had this to say.

"Roy's actions at the conclusion of the game were irresponsible. One of the responsibilities of an NHL coach is to help diffuse volatile situations on the bench."

The NHL doesn't typically like seeing coaches act in a way that isn't befitting of coaches. Consider this a strong reminder that he needs to keep it in check a little better. That partition between the benches is there for a reason and the NHL doesn't appreciate a coach trying to push it down.

After the game, Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau spoke about the incident and said that one thing that had him upset was the fact that Roy was yelling at his players. Roy didn't take kindly to the allegations. From Dater at the Post:

Boudreau after the game called Roy's actions "classless" and said he initially approached Roy near the glass partition because Roy was yelling at his players.

Roy fired back at Boudreau after Avs practice Thursday.

"What Boudreau said was all lies," Roy said. "I don't talk to players, I respect all the players. I'm certainly not going to get too involved in this one, but when you talk about classless — when you're lying, this is classless."

This is just one game. It's going to be a fun season in Denver, hoo boy.

Roy is a rookie coach in the NHL but he's not a rookie to being fined as a coach. He was fined multiple times while a coach of the Quebec Remparts in the QMJHL as well. It's a pretty safe bet that he'll be fined again as an NHL coach, more than once. He's a passionate and fiery coach. This comes with the territory.

Though he probably will tone down the shouting at opponents and attempts at fighting the opposing coach.
