Unless a goalie is diving, stick saves don't often get the heart pumping like a good flash of the glove or a “kick save and a beauty.” However, the kind of stick save Linkoping goalie Christian Engstrand made in the Swedish Hockey League Thursday is about as ridiculous as you'll see. (WARNING: Weird Techno Music)
A fluttering shot from HV71's Stefan Johansson may have caught a deflection or two en route to the goal. I don't think Engstrand even saw it coming until the last second, but he went into some sort of barrel roll and got the puck with the top half of his stick, which of course is the narrowest part of the goalie paddle.
Engstrand put up some big numbers in the SHL last season with a 1.89 goals-against average and .936 save percentage, so the guy can play a bit.
If you can bear the music in the video, it just gets more amazing with each viewing. Perhaps it was a lucky bounce for Engstrand, but he sure made it look cool.
Good luck topping that stick save this year, NHL.
