The Vancouver Canucks' forward depth looks like it has taken another hit after head coach John Tortorella declared Alex Burrows will be out for “a couple of weeks.”

Burrows is believed to have been injured while blocking a shot in Thursday night's game against the San Jose Sharks. Tortorella had previously sounded optimistic that Burrows would play Saturday night, but clearly whatever news the Canucks were hoping for on the agitating forward was not good.

Burrows played 18:34 in the Canucks' season opener and was credited with three blocked shots.

The Canucks are already short Zack Kassian, who still has four games left on his suspension from high-sticking Oilers forward Sam Gagner in the preseason.

Tortorella said the team would not be calling up another forward to replace the injured Burrows and will dress an extra defenseman instead. That may suggest the nature of Burrows' injury isn't too serious and he isn't expected to be out for too long, even with “a couple of weeks” being an unspecific timeline for his return.

After getting thoroughly handled by San Jose in the opener, the Canucks really can't afford to be without Burrows long, especially with the 32-year-old winger being a solid source of scoring for the club.
