Empty-net goals so often are not fun. There's no challenge, nothing really noteworthy about them unless someone hilariously misses. That's not true for what Matt Duchene did Thursday night with the net empty in Boston, however.
With the Avalanche leading the hometown Bruins 1-0 late in the third period, Duchene made a nice defensive play to stick the puck away from David Krejci and out of the zone. Then he turned on the jets, blowing past Patrice Bergeron, collecting the loose puck and shooting it in from a tough angle, all while being hooked by Bergeron.
It doesn't always take a remarkable shot or nasty-looking deke to make a great goal. Sometimes seeing an individual effort like this is just as great. It looks like Duchene was shot out of a cannon after he makes that first step. There's a reason this GIF is blowing up Reddit right now.
What a remarkable play by Duchene on what is usually an unremarkable situation.
