The New York Rangers are off to a simply abysmal start with a 1-4-0 record and a minus-16 goal differential so something has to change. On Monday GM Glen Sather made the first moves.

Joining the waiver wire on Monday were forward Arron Asham as well as veteran backup goaltender Martin Biron.

Biron being cut is a surprise even though his numbers are as bad as you'll see in the NHL. He appeared in two games this season, once in relief of Henrik Lundqvist, and was torched. The sample size is incredibly small but he has a .763 save percentage and a 7.61 goals against average thus far. He was a victim of the Sharks' onslaught in San Jose last week and was the goalie victimized by Tomas Hertl's goal of the year candidate.

Still, it's a surprise to see Biron being cut so soon. Biron has been nothing but a consistent backup to Henrik Lundqvist in recent seasons, not being called upon often but performing well when he was. Last season he had a .917 save percentage with a 2.32 goals against average. It will be interesting to see if any team put a claim on Biron, you could do worse for backups in this league.

Where the Rangers go at the backup spot now will be interesting. You may recall they brought in Johan Hedberg in camp on a tryout before cutting him when Biron came back to health. They could call down to the AHL for goaltender Cameron Talbot who has a 2.54 GAA and .918 save percentage in three games for Hartford.

Asham meanwhile has just two points in his last 30 games stretching through last season. This season he is just a minus-3 in three games, averaging 10:10 of ice time per game.
