The Red Wings were able to grab a road victory with Jonas Gustavsson in net Monday, but it looks like they'll have to do it again Tuesday night in Columbus. Jimmy Howard will remain out for the second-straight game with a hand injury, as he Blue Jackets broadcaster Jeff Rimer.

Head coach Mike Babcock had a somewhat confusing explanation of what's going on with Howard:

“He practiced (Sunday) and was all right but he's got some blood in the hand and they're trying to keep (the swelling) down, but maybe it's swollen too much now, so I don't know what's going to happen [Tuesday]. We'll monitor the situation.” (MLive.com)

Blood in the hand? That just may be Babcockian speak for bruise, as Howard's left hand is bruised according to Ansar Khan of MLive.

Regardless of what one calls a bruise, the team leans on Howard heavily. He started all five of the team's games prior to Monday and appeared in all but six games last season.

Gustavsson found out 15 minutes before opening faceoff that he'd be in for Howard Monday. He made 28 saves, including some key stops on Boston Bruins power plays.

Now he'll get some more time to prepare, but the Wings likely don't want to be without their starting goaltender for terribly long.

Howard is 3-2-0 with a .922 save percentage and 2.39 goals-against average through his first five starts this season.
