Mike Smith scored his first career goal against the Detroit Red Wings Saturday night. Mike Smith, as in the Phoenix Coyotes goaltender.

With time winding down and the Coyotes ahead 4-2, Smith caught the puck in his glove, immediately dropped and in one motion snapped it all the way down the ice. With just one tenth of a second remaining on the clock, it crossed the goal line.

The goal was reviewed and it stood.

It's actually an incredible play by Smith, who is the first goaltender to score in a game since Martin Brodeur was credited with a goal on March 21 last season. Brodeur was the beneficiary of the Carolina Hurricanes putting it in their own net on a delayed penalty. In Marty's defense, he has scored twice the old-fashioned way too.

Anytime you see a goalie put one in, it's a real thrill. True goalie goals like the one Smith scored are even rarer now with the introduction of the trapezoid behind the net. With the goalie basically only having a small area in which he can play the puck, there's less opportunity. So enjoy this one, folks. It could be a while before the next one.

Smith is the 11th goaltender in NHL history to be credited with a goal.

Smith's goal was the fourth for the Coyotes in the third period, leading to a 5-2 score. His goal came not long after Shane Victorino's grand slam made it an eerily-similar 5-2 score against the Tigers in the ALCS. Talk about a rough night for Detroit.
