Minnesota Wild defenseman Jonas Brodin became a key piece for the Wild last season as a rookie, earning a ton of Calder consideration while partnering with Ryan Suter. That's why the Wild are holding their collective breath.

Early on against the Nashville Predators on Tuesday night, a 2-0 Wild win, Brodin was on the receiving end of a dump-in that hit him in the face. Shields help but they don't protect from everything. It didn't look very good at all.

Brodin left the game and didn't return. After the game coach Mike Yeo explained why we didn't see Brodin again: he wasn't around.

That was the only update the Wild gave on Brodin so at this point there's no telling really how bad it might be.

While the sample size is small, Brodin has shown why he was so highly regarded last season in the first nine games. He posted three goals and three assists while averaging close to 26 minutes per game for the early part of this schedule. Needless to say for a team that's had a tough time scoring, that's a huge loss if he's out for any period of time. It's tough enough that he's a top-pairing defenseman who logs heavy minutes, tougher when he's producing offense from the blue line.
