Another minutes-eating defenseman for an NHL team will be out an extended period of time as the Calgary Flames announced Mark Giordano will be out with a broken ankle. The Flames' captain has been placed on injured reserve and is expected to miss 6-8 weeks.

Giordano hasn't played since Oct. 21 and will be sorely missed in the lineup.

In eight games this year, Giordano has posted nine points including seven assists. He averaged more than 25 minutes a night, and was second on the team to Dennis Wideman in minutes played.

Calgary has been better than expected so far this year, but still lags in sixth in the Pacific Division with a 5-4-2 record. Being without the captain and one of the team's top defensemen for an extended period is going to create quite a struggle to keep pace in what looks like the NHL's toughest division.

The Flames also announced scoring winger Lee Stempniak is week-to-week with a broken foot and Chris Breen is day-to-day with an abdominal strain.

The Giordano announcement comes less than 24 hours after the Pittsburgh Penguins announced they'd be without Rob Scuderi, who also suffered a broken ankle. No timetable for Scuderi's return was given.
