We don't say that just because he's their captain. Of course not. It's because Ovechkin fires shots on net like a mad man and on the season has 10 goals to go with five assists. Considering the team only has 34 goals this season, Ovechkin is factoring in on a little less than half of them.
So when the Capitals announced on Wednesday that Ovechkin left practice and is now day to day with an upper-body injury, you can understand why Caps fans are holding their breath.
Given the prognosis you can assume that it's not a serious injury at all to Ovechkin (oh, and feel better, Jay!) and he might not miss any time at all. Ovechkin is a tough and durable guy, it wouldn't be a surprise if he's on the ice Friday at Philadelphia and on Saturday vs. Florida. If he's not, though, at least the Caps are getting a pair of teams near the bottom of the standings.
In other Caps news, they also made a couple of callups from AHL Hershey, bringing up Michael Latta and defenseman Dmitry Orlov.
