Only 37:17 into his first game back as a member of the Flyers after getting traded from the Colorado AvalancheThursday, Steve Downie found himself in a fight with Capitals tough guy Aaron Volpatti .

After the game, Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren announced Downie had suffered a concussion in the fight. An hour or so later, Holmgren informed reporters Downie was transported to a local hospital for further testing and observation.

Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News reported a Flyers player was being taken out of the arena on a stretcher.

That player was apparently Downie. So this is a potentially serious injury for Philly's new acquisition.

Here's the fight in which Downie appears to have been injured.

Volpatti caught Downie with a vicious left cleanly in the face. Shortly after, the Flyers' pugilist got his fellow combatant's attention and the linesmen stepped in to stop the fight. Downie did not return to the game.

Downie was acquired Thursday in a surprise trade between the Flyers and Avs, which sent Maxime Talbot to Colorado.

This is certainly a sensitive situation at this point as not much is known about Downie's condition. We'll provide updates as they become available.
