Folks at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit were in for a real treat Thursday night as they saw what may have been two of the finest goals scored this season. Both Dallas Stars forward Jamie Benn and Red Wings magician Pavel Datsyuk each put on a terrific display of stickhandling in the same period in what was a generally exciting game at the Joe.
First it was Benn, who collected the puck in his own zone before turning on the jets and stickhanded through four different Red Wings players before making a nice move on goalie Jimmy Howard and putting it in. At that point, Benn's goal tied the game 2-2.
Oh, did I forget to mention Benn took the shot while falling down? Well, he took the shot while falling down. Just a remarkable play overall (and some suspect defending from Detroit).
Then Pavel Datsyuk did what Pavel Datsyuk always does, as in be amazing. With the game still tied 2-2, Datsyuk took a pass from Henrik Zetterberg out of the corner. With Shawn Horcoff right there to defend, Datsyuk took out his magic wand and crossed up Horcoff something awful to give himself the space to roof a shot past Kari Lehtonen.
He is not of this world and I am surprised the government has not taken him captive to study him at Area 51.
The Stars tied it again later in the third period and ended up winning 4-3 in overtime on a less remarkable goal.
Even though the Red Wings lost, if you had tickets to that game, you got a great deal. They should be charging double for that kind of entertainment.
