In a rare deal between Albertan rivals, defenseman Ladislav Smid and goalie prospect Olivier Roy have been traded to the Calgary Flames. In exchange, the Edmonton Oilers receive goalie prospect Laurent Brossoit and center Roman Horak.

Smid's minutes have dwindled a bit this season from his career norms, but he has been very strong defensively for the typically weak Edmonton blue line. The Flames have a void left by Mark Giordano who broke his ankle in a game last week and will be out for some time.

Edmonton had just signed Smid to a four-year extension last season even though he looked to be good trade bait near the deadline last season. Smid's $14 million deal expires in 2017 and comes with a $3.5 million cap hit.

Over 474 career games, all with the Oilers, Smid has 65 points.

It's a bit of a strange move by Edmonton unless it is to make room for another piece. TSN's Darren Dreger suggests currently out-of-work goalie Ilya Bryzgalov could be such a player.

The Oilers haven't gotten the type of performance they expected from goaltender Devan Dubnyk, who owns a putrid .878 save percentage currently.

Bryzgalov, meanwhile, hasn't been playing after being bought out by the Flyers in the off-season. It is unclear how much of an upgrade he would be over Dubnyk, but Edmonton looks like it is in full-on desperation mode right now.

With Smid's $3.5 million hit off the books and only prospects in return from Calgary -- though Horak does have 82 NHL games under his belt -- there's room to make something happen now.
