One of the great treats of having the NHL Network in the U.S. is that they often air CBC Hockey Night in Canada's broadcasts. That includes the stunning opening montages that have become as much a part of the Hockey Night in Canada tradition as Don Cherry himself.
Tim Thompson, who puts together the montages, had one of his best efforts yet for tonight's game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins. With Monday being Veteran's Day in the U.S., or Remembrance Day as it's known in Canada, Thompson included some of the usual NHL highlight footage, but also included some tremendous video of Canadian military over the years.
With music from Toronto-based band, The Strumbellas, it really hits.
It doesn't try to compare sports to the military like so many try to do this time of year. It just lets the hockey and military imagery stand independently, which is the way to do it.
The montage gets people excited for the hockey game, but also provides a solid reminder of the sacrifices made by those who serve. Maybe those two things shouldn't go together, but Thompson's work effectively intertwines the two. Just a really stunning piece of work.
