Stars backup goaltender Dan Ellis has a new mask to wear in Dallas and he's bringing in some old with the new.

As you know by now, the Stars have a new logo and slightly different color scheme this year, emphasizing the green. It's not a total transformation but it's certainly new. To complement the updated logo Ellis' mask will feature some of the old look in Dallas; specifically some of its greatest players.

Mask artist Dave Gunnarsson painted the mask that features Mike Modano, Brett Hull, Ed Belfour and Marty Turco. He explained on Facebook:

Dan Ellis had an awesome idea for his new DallasStars mask, he wanted to pay tribute to the legends of Dallas Stars, all created in a new iconic way.

I loved his idea, and Dan is a very skilled artist himself, he sent me some cool drawings. Together we brainstormed, and a plan crystallized how to create the tribute design. I picked up my airbrush guns and started to work.

Dan Ellis wanted to honor the four Dallas legends Brett Hull, Mike Modano, Ed Belfour and Marty Turco. The foundation of Dallas Stars. The goalies are created with paintings inspired by their classic mask designs, and Hull and Modano are created with portrait paintings mixed with action paintings.

That's a pretty neat concept, including just an eagle for Belfour, and one that should be a hit with the Stars fans. After all, who wouldn't want to be reminded of the great moments those players provided all of them in Dallas?

One person who might not love it as much, though, is coach Lindy Ruff. Seeing the presence of Hull on that mask and the famous image of his Cup-winning goal might be enough to cost Ellis a start or two behind Kari Lehtonen. OK, not really, but there has to still be some of Ruff that has a hard time embracing the history of the Stars' Stanley Cup and Hull's role considering it came in controversial fashion against Ruff's team.
