Alexander Semin out indefinitely with concussion

The Carolina Hurricanes will be without Alexander Semin for an undetermined amount of time as the skilled winger has been diagnosed with a concussion, according to Canes head coach Kirk Muller. Semin already missed the Hurricanes' 4-1 loss to Boston Monday.

The Russian forward left Saturday's game against the St. Louis Blues early in the second period after taking a hard hit from defenseman Alex Pietrangelo, who was not penalized on the play. No supplementary discipline is expected either.

Semin has nine points for the Hurricanes this season including three goals. That's below what the team was hoping to get out of him after a 44-point campaign last season.

More disconcerting, however, Semin is out with another concussion after his season ended early last year with the same injury. Multiple concussions are obviously not good, but these two aren't terribly spread out either.

As with any concussion, it is difficult to know just how long it will take Semin to get back. The Hurricanes had really started putting things together when they rattled up four wins in five games the first week of November before falling in back-to-back games Saturday and Monday.

Though Semin has underperformed a bit last year, he remains one of the most dangerous players on Carolina's roster when healthy. The Hurricanes are still very much in the thick of things in the Metropolitan, but staying in it could be tougher without Semin.
