Playing the team that bought him out over the offseason for the first time, Mikhail Grabovski was looking for a little payback. Unfortunately, the current Washington Capitals forward would end up having to leave the game early with a pretty scary injury.
While attempting to make a diving stick check on David Clarkson, Grabovski's face ended up dangerously close to Maple Leafs forward David Clarkson's skates. While Clarkson was following through on his stride, he accidentally kicked Grabovski in the face.
The result was not pretty, with a badly bloodied Grabovski laying on the ice. He would make it off under his own power, but immediately went to the dressing room.
UPDATE: Grabovski returned to the Capitals bench for the third period, which is pretty amazing. He's awfully lucky it wasn't worse.
Here's the GIF via @cjzero. There's no blood here, but is not for the faint of heart…
Grabovski, who has been critical of the Leafs and particularly coach Randy Carlyle since his buyout, didn't get much sympathy from the Maple Leafs fans in the building, even drawing some boos. The Leafs did have the puck in the attacking zone when the whistle was blown, which also didn't make the fans too happy. It was a much-needed whistle though.
Any time you see "skate to the face," it's a scary situation.
