The Washington Capitals placed Michal Neuvirth on injured reserve Monday after the goalie suffered a right leg injury during warm-ups Friday.

According to the Washington Post, Neuvirth, who was expected to start the game in net against the Canadiens but stepped on a puck before the game and slipped, injuring his leg.

“My understanding is he stood on a puck as he first came out,” Caps coach Adam Oates told the paper. “Lights come on, he went out, stepped on a puck.”

In his stead Friday, normal starter Braden Holtby was thrust into action, and video coach Brett Leonhardt was briefly signed to act as Holtby's backup.

The team has since called up Phillipp Grubauer to replace Neuvirth on the roster.

Neuvirth has appeared in seven games this season, compiling a record of 2-3-1.
