Toronto Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf has been suspended two games for boarding Boston Bruins defenseman Kevan Miller.

Phaneuf may be getting off lightly, considering this is classified as boarding and not a check from behind. It sure seemed to be a hit right to the numbers into the boards.

Other checks from behind have drawn steeper suspensions this year. There was no penalty called on the play, which is pretty shocking. Miller did leave the game, but it was almost over anyway. He was not seriously injured.

It was such a clear hit from behind, with Miller's back turned for more than enough time for Phaneuf to ease up or avoid the hit all together. Instead, Phaneuf drove through the prone forward. Two games is pretty light, but so is the five games Neal got for kneeing Brad Marchand in the head.

It seems the Department of Player Safety is losing its bite a bit this season. That could change slightly with a rather lengthy suspension to Bruins forward Shawn Thornton, who has an in-person hearing tentatively set for Friday according to TSN's Bob McKenzie. Thornton is being called to the carpet for knocking out Brooks Orpik.

The Leafs will be without Phaneuf for two really tough contests against Western Conference opponents. He'll miss Toronto's games against the Los Angeles Kings and St. Louis Blues.
