Jared Cowen suspended two games for illegal hit to the head

Ottawa Senators defenseman Jared Cowen was suspended for two games on Wednesday by the NHL Department of Player Safety.

In Tuesday's game in Buffalo, Cowen came across the blue line and clipped Sabres forward Zemgus Girgensons's head with his shoulder. Girgensons was only momentarily shaken up and remained in the game. There was no penalty assessed to Cowen during the game.

Cowen had a questionable hit earlier this season, a hit that left Red Wings star Pavel Datsyuk with a concussion but the league determined that was a reflexive and non-predatory move. There was no such defense for Cowen this time.

Cowen has three goals and three assists this season in 31 games, averaging close to 19 minutes of ice time per game. He'll miss Thursday's rematch game with Buffalo and then Saturday's tilt against LA. He will also forfeit $31,794.88 in salary.
