The prospects of an outdoor hockey game in Los Angeles always seemed a bit odd, but of course extraordinarily unique. So how much of that uniqueness translate to ticket sales for an outdoor game at Dodger Stadium? Well, perhaps not as much as expected.
About 80 percent of the tickets for the Jan. 25 outdoor contest between the Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks have been sold, which is forcing the NHL to lower some prices to try and boost sales. Promoting it as a special offer, the NHL is taking $50 off of select tickets.

Prices for a category of seating for a highly anticipated Kings-Ducks game at Dodger Stadium on Jan. 25 are being dropped from $249 to either $189 or $199, according to Kings spokesman Mike Altieri.
The move was made with the Stadium Series game less than a month away after sales at the higher price point were less than brisk and the subject of some fan displeasure. But the NHL, not the Kings or Ducks, sets the prices and corrected the miscalculation now rather than later.
Fans who already purchased $249 tickets will be refunded the difference. Altieri said Thursday that the event is 80% sold out, adding that total capacity is "still being defined," but expected to be similar to that of a Dodgers game, about 54,000.
The good news for fans who want to go is that the NHL is correcting its mistake. It's still an expensive ticket, but a $50 decrease is pretty substantial. It's also good that the league is going to hook up the folks who already spent the full price as well.
The bad news is on the NHL's end as ticket sales are apparently falling below expectations. The allure of outdoor hockey in California just didn't hook fans like the NHL thought it would, it seems.
The Stadium Series is an expensive gamble for the NHL, but it's a worthwhile experiement. The league has arguably never been more popular, so it's hard to blame NHL execs for pushing the envelope. Until the games are played, however, it will be tough to know just how much of a success the Stadium Series was or wasn't.
