One of the great stories of the NHL season has been the scoring prowess of Alexander Steen for the St. Louis Blues. Unfortunately for both the Blues and Steen, the newly prolific goal scorer is out indefinitely with a concussion and has been placed on injured reserve. Blues GM Doug Armstrong confirmed the news today.

Steen left last Saturday's game against the Edmonton Oilers in the second period and did not return. He also missed the Blues' last game before the Christmas break.

Steen's hot goal scoring has cooled off slightly since his torrid start to the year, but he still has 24 goals and 38 points in 35 games. He has been driving a lot of the Blues offensive play in helping the team to a 24-7-5 record, which is good for second in the Central Division.

Losing Steen for any amount of time hurts, but not knowing when he'll return certainly isn't encouraging either. This news also may impact Sweden's plans for the Olympics as Steen is expected to make that squad and play a prominent role on the roster.

As is the case with any concussion, you just never know how long it will take for a player to shake the symptoms.
