The New York Rangers have acquired noted agitator Daniel Carcillo from the Los Angeles Kings for a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. The move comes less than 24 hours after Rangers tough guy Derek Dorsett broke his fibula.

"We picked up a player than can bring an element of toughness, with us losing Dorsett yesterday for 4-6 weeks it's an area we felt we needed to get a little bit better," head coach Alain Vigneault told Blueshirts United, the official blog of the New York Rangers. "Dan became available and we picked him up."

"For us it's a low-risk move," explained Vigneault. "He's in the last year of his contract, not very expensive, and hopefully he'll come in and help us."

Vigneault is right. It is a low-risk move for the Rangers, who apparently felt they needed some toughness to replace Dorsett. Whether or not he makes the team better will remain to be seen. Carcillo may end up in and out of the lineup, but he's a veteran with some high-level experience.

Carcillo only appeared in 26 games with the Kings since being acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks in the offseason. He has a goal and an assist to go along with 57 penalty minutes.

Carcillo's being a part of the Blackhawks' postseason run to the Stanley Cup probably doesn't hurt his value, but it's hard to imagine he'll bring much more to the Rangers' lineup at this point. He only appeared in four playoff contests during Chicago's title run.

The often willing combatant has 1,136 career penalty minutes in 359 NHL games.
