Hockey is coming to Dodger Stadium later this month, and both Vin Scully and Wayne Gretzky are expected to be on hand.
In addition, The Great One is expected to be on hand Monday at Dodger Stadium when the equipment necessary to make an outdoor hockey game possible in SoCal arrives.
"Wayne started it all, and in many respects not to have Wayne at this event would be almost unimaginable," NHL Chief Operating Officer John Collins told the Los Angeles Times. "It's almost a valentine to him and everything that he accomplished."
The game will have a distinctly different feel from those played in Chicago and New York, as there is expected to be palm trees and a beach volleyball court near the rink. And to ensure the California vibe is fully embraced, legendary baseball broadcaster Vin Scully is expected to be involved, according to the paper.
For Gretzky, who has been away from the game for four years after a dispute with the league, there's perhaps no better stage for his return than Southern California, where he once electrified crowds as a member of the Kings.
