Move aside, Tomas Hertl, you have company in the battle for Goal of the Season.
On Wednesday evening in Philadelphia, diminutive Hurricanes forward Nathan Gerbe pounced on a pass that got past Flyers defenseman Luke Schenn leading to a clear breakaway. With a full head of steam, Gerbe started to cross the net but changed directions by going between the legs and shooting back across his body, and goalie Steve Mason's.
The result was a gorgeous goal and a 2-0 Hurricanes lead.
Immediately the comparisons will be made to Hertl's goal early this season and for good reason, it was pretty much the same move. Though we'll give a slight edge to Hertl for the Finish. Gerbe's shot was obviously spectacular but didn't quite roof it like Hertl; Gerbe's shot hit Mason before deflecting in the net.
Maybe the best part of the video above is after it's scored you can tell the second that the Philadelphia crowd sees the replay up on the big screen. Even the fans of the other team couldn't help but let out an impressed "Oooh." When you get that reaction on the road, you know it was good.
