PHOTO: Notre Dame's military appreciation jerseys are fantastic

The University of Notre Dame hockey team is hosting its annual military appreciation weekend at Compton Family Ice Center. As is typically the custom, the Fighting Irish will be wearing commemorative jerseys that would be auctioned off online to help raise funds for a military-based charity.

This year, the jerseys feature Notre Dame's iconic leprechaun mascot. Instead of being clad in his usual emerald green, the leprechaun is sporting camouflage. The Irish will wear them during this weekend's series against Hockey East foe Northeastern University.

The numbers are also camouflage, which oddly works really well with Notre Dame's white, blue and gold jerseys.

All proceeds from the auction with benefit Hockey Saves, a non-profit that has provided an athletic outlet to military members through hockey by helping provide equipment and ice time. There are now over 200 servicemen and women involved in the organization, which has increased the need for funds and equipment donations.

Notre Dame goaltender Joe Rogers (pictured above) has joined forces the organization and serves on its board.

More from Rogers from und.com:

"These men and women who represent our country truly embody the courage, the sacrifice and the ideals, which we all hope to represent. It has been with great pleasure that I have been fortunate to be an ambassador for the game of hockey to unite players from multiple teams and leagues to support one cause under our nation's colors," adds Rogers.

"Hockey Saves has coined the phrase #hockeyplayersunite and in my opinion this has been a great reminder that we all have the same pride for our country and those who defend our freedoms regardless of the team jersey we put on each weekend."

A lot of military appreciation jerseys have been auctioned off in the past, but few have melded the team's own logo with the cause as well as these seem to. Helping out a great initiative is always a good thing to do, but the Irish will be looking good while doing it, too.
