Goalie Fight: John Gibson, Jeff Deslauriers throw down in AHL bout

The latest in goalie fisticuffs comes to us from the American Hockey League. In a game between the Norfolk Admirals, affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks, and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, farm club of the Pittsburgh Penguins, the two goalies met at center ice in a rather unusual fashion.

While Ducks prized goalie prospect John Gibson was heading back to his crease after a timeout, he bumped Pens netminder Jeff Deslauriers. Then the gloves went flying.

To give a little back story, earlier in the contest, Desluariers took exception to a late poke from Admirals forward Zach Stortini. Deslauriers gave Stortini a few blocker sandwiches and a large scrum ensued.

After that was broken up, the two teams were at their benches for a timeout. Then the goalies threw down. Deslauriers threw the first gloved punches at Gibson, but the young Admirals goaltender got a couple of his own and scored the takedown.

The penalty breakdown of the goalie melee was rather interesting. Deslauriers got two minor penalties for roughing, a five-minute major for fighting and a game misconduct. Gibson meanwhile got a double-minor for roughing and was allowed to stay in the game.

This isn't your typical goalie fight where the two guys leave their creases and skate for a center-ice duel. This came during a stoppage, which may be why the penalties didn't result in Gibson getting tossed as well.

The 20-year-old Admirals netminder actually had already left the ice surface after the scrap until he was told he would be able to keep playing.

So for those that were disappointed Marc-Andre Fleury and Peter Budaj's goalie fight was (smartly) derailed by referees, the AHL is more than happy to oblige your heavily-padded pugilism fixation.
