Brian Rafalski's comeback attempt with the ECHL Florida Everblades has come to an early end. The longtime NHL defenseman was released by the team on Tuesday.

Ouch, that one might sting, talk about insult to injury.

This might not just be the end of the odd Rafalski-Everblade era, but perhaps end his hopes of trying to return to the NHL. Injuries don't typically get easier to deal with when a player gets up there in age like the 40-year-old Rafalski. The road back to the NHL gets a lot harder from here.

Rafalski got the itch to play hockey again at the Winter Classic Alumni Showdown in Detroit when he played for the Red Wings. After that he set his eyes on trying to play again after injuries cut his career a little short.

According to Hockey Database, Rafalski played three games for the Everblades and recorded one assist.
